Wines - 2017 YP Shiraz
Expressions straight up are of a spice and herbal field day, with a gentle menthol characteristic in the back ground. Vibrant tones of freshness, coming form components of whole bunch fermentation, linger nicely. There is a real structure to this easy drinking wine that gives that hint of chocolate and mocha characters, with the extra oak time for this vintage of 20 months to give a little more back bone to this wine, it allows to be a very interesting easy drinking wine but also something that there is no rush to consume. An elegant shiraz coming in at 13.6% alc.
Hand picked on Friday 17th of March, at 13.2 baume into half tonne picking bins, the grapes are then put through the destemmer to wild ferment in open fermenters. Achieving 11 days on skins we then gently basket pressed the skins and racked into seasoned French and American oak. After spending 20 months in oak the wine was blended with selected barrels from other Shiraz vineyards to produce an easy drinking style of wine, but can still age gracefully if chosen.
Vintage 2017 is known so far as the wettest vintage on record, with cooler than average days and nights. leading to a cool spring. With great soil moisture from some nice rains in late January and early February, gave the perfect chance for slow ripening. Average temperatures with two bursts of high heat and then into an Indian summer in March. This was a year we had slow and healthy growth which created a year for elegant, spicier fruit.
Susan & Michael Papps- Nuriootpa 1995 - Grower / Vineyard
The Shiraz vineyard which issituated on our YP estate, is all organically ran, with no chemical interference since 2011. We bought this property in 2010 and in 2011 we took over all aspects of vineyard management, aligning with our ethos and beliefs for vineyard practices. We maintain weed control with mowing and whipper snippering and future progression to let the sheep roam freely after picking and before buds appear. This is on Richter 99 rootstock and the clone 1654, planted by previous owners the Hahn family. With rows running North/ South allowing morning and afternoon sun to gently ripen fruit with the help of catch wires to allow airflow and sunlight. This vineyard is the backbone of the YP Shiraz with the balance made up from selected barrels from other Shiraz vineyards.
