Wines - 2015 Second Take Mataro
Yowsers! Hold your horses; whats that? A 100% whole bunch Mataro from the Barossa. Yes dear wine lover, that is correct so buckle up and prepare yourself for a delicious ride on one of our favourite grape varieties. Mataro just rocks. It’s savoury, spicy and just dead sexy. Our Second Take Mataro, as mentioned previously is 100% whole bunch, aged for 8 months in 100% old, seasoned French oak barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2015 vintage in the Barossa was a good’un, stretching out nicely, giving us grapes with great flavour and balance. That certainly makes out job easier in the winery as we can guide the wine to bottle with minimal intervention and I’m sure you’ll agree, the resulting wine is pretty hard to put down.
Medium cherry/red in hue with fruit aromas of plum, mulberry and blueberry bursting of the glass. You’ll find hints of exotic spice, licorice, deep Barossa earthen notes, roasting meats, macerating berry fruits, gentle, nutty French oak and purple flowers.
It’s at the lighter end of medium-bodied with abundant fruit flavours of spiced plum, mulberry, blueberry and macerated summer berry fruits. As you’d expect there is plenty of spice and earthy depth to its flavour profile but it is remarkably light on its feet, displaying hints of roasting meats, purple flowers, hoi sin, subdued French oak and light hints of polished leather. Savoury with light velvety tannins cascading down through the ripe fruit it is a beauty. We reckon this would be just the ticket with some Peking duck!
100% whole bunches, this wine was naturally fermented in barrel, rolled twice a day for 22 days on skins. Basket pressed and racked to 100% old French Oak for 8 months prior to bottling unfined and unfiltered.

Winemaker : Michael Papps
The grapes were dry grown in the sub region of Light Pass in heavy red loam soil. Vines were planted in the early 1950s and 1970s.
Cropped at just over 1.5 tonnes per acre, the vineyard was hand-picked on 1st April when optimum flavours and balance were achieved in the grape.

'Respect to those winemakers who push boundaries. A standing ovation for Michael Papps particularly for how easy he makes "different" look here.
This is the first time Mataro makes an appearance in the Second Take range, and honestly, where has it been! I do love Mataro done well but this has point of difference on so many levels.'

100% whole bunch. 22 days on skins and 8 months in old French oak. Unfiltered, unfined. Smells of juicy dark cherries and raspberries and musk lollies and warm doonas and winter stews and all things comfortable. Continues that dark fruit profile when you slurp it, along with a light tonic-herbal lift. But it’s not about the “palate,” it’s about the funky and smooth flavour, with a surprising amount of acidity that brightens the mood. Simply delicious.
