The Wine
Absolutely intoxicating herbaceous nose, of black currant, medicinal soother , the nose lingers in a way that you are happy just to engulf the beauty of Cabernet Sauvignon for a while.
The palate comes through with dark chocolate notes and a warmth from the softness but certainly not the alcohol which is a breezy 13.4% alc, this celebrates drinking Cabernet Sauvignon at any time of the year, when it's hot or cold.
Only 1609 bottles made of the 2017 vintage, this is the last vintage of the BB Cabernet Sauvignon as this vineyard has been passed onto Peyton Papps for her Verjus.
The Winemaking
The Cabernet Sauvignon was hand picked in the early morning of Thursday 2nd April at 13.8 baume spending 18 days on skins, wild fermented and then gently pressed off on the 22nd of April before being transferred to seasoned French Oak barrels for 19 months.
This wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered , leaving it with great texture. This wine has been made in a vibrant style that can be aged gracefully or can be drunk immediately, expressing everything that is beautiful about Cabernet Sauvignon, varietal-ness and herbaceousness at its best.
The Vineyard
Vintage 2017 is known so far as the wettest vintage on record, with cooler than average days and nights. leading to a cool spring. With great soil moisture from some nice rains in late January and early February, gave the perfect chance for slow ripening. Average temperatures with two bursts of high heat and then into an Indian summer in March.
This was a year we had slow and healthy growth which created a year for elegant, spicier fruit.
Susan & Michael Papps - Nuriootpa 1980 - Grower / Vineyard
The small vineyard on our Estate at our Home, is all organically grown. This vineyard is located in a strip of dirt known as the golden mile of beautiful soils that winds its way down Barossa Valley way.
Rows are planted east/West and the vineyard has been ran on organically practices since 2011 with no chemical interference since 2011. Our sheep roam this vineyard freely during dormant months and maintain weeds, and in the interim we mow and whiper snipper to maintain aesthetics.
The vineyard has had a lot of rework for Utupya and still needs continual work in the next few years .
